Black & White

Unleash your creativity by capturing British wildlife and landscapes in black and white. The judges are looking for innovative and creative use of the medium to showcase the beauty of the natural world.

British Seasons

Portray the best of British wildlife in each of the four seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Create a stunning portfolio of images that encapsulate the essence of each season or focus on one season to showcase the beauty of British wildlife.

Coast & Marine

Explore the coastal beauty of the British Isles, including the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, and Scilly Isles. Capture the diverse marine life and landscapes along the coasts for a chance to win in this category.

Habitat

Highlight the importance of ecosystems and the environment that sustains wildlife. Whether it's a wildlife feeding on wildflowers or a predator hunting in the grasslands, showcase the intricate relationships between animals and their habitats.

Hidden Britain

Reveal the hidden universe of invertebrate animal species that thrive around us but often go unnoticed. Capture the unique and unseen life on a small scale for a chance to win in this category.

Urban Wildlife

Discover the wild side of urban environments by capturing wildlife in towns, cities, parks, and gardens. Show the beauty of wild animals and plants coexisting alongside human habitats in your photographs.

Wild woods

The judges are seeking an image that highlights the beauty, significance, or majestic splendor of British woodlands. Photographs must be clearly taken in or of woodland areas. Submissions can include portraits of woodland wildlife, scenic wooded landscapes, detailed plant close-ups, or depictions of the relationships between species and their forest environments.

Documentary series

This category allows for a sequence of up to six images showcasing any British wildlife, habitat, or landscape conservation issue. The judges will be looking for creativity and innovation in storytelling within the series of up to six images.

Wildlife in HD video

This category seeks talented cinematographers creating short films up to 3 minutes in length. The emphasis should be on cinematography and demonstrate a strong understanding of sequence creation. Your film could document an animal's day, a behavioral sequence, the struggle to raise young, or another compelling subject.

Ocean Drifter is a photo of a football that is covered in goose barnacles below the waterline. Above the water is just a football. But below the waterline is a colony of creatures.

Young BWPA

The title of Young British Wildlife Photographer of the Year is awarded to one of the winners from the following three age categories:

  • 11 and under

  • 12-14 years

  • 15-17 years
