Saudi Arabia’s Commitment

On September 12, 2023, Saudi Arabia and UNEP jointly announced that the Kingdom will host World Environment Day 2024. Here’s what you need to know:

Focus Areas:

Land Restoration:

Saudi Arabia aims to revive degraded lands, recognizing their critical role in ecosystem health. Land restoration contributes to achieving the SDGs and ensures sustainable development.

Desertification:

With up to 40% of the planet’s land degraded, desertification poses a significant threat. Saudi Arabia’s commitment to combat desertification aligns with global efforts.

Drought Resilience:

Increasing drought frequency affects half of the world’s population. Urgent action is essential to mitigate its impact.

UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030):

Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. By protecting and reviving ecosystems, we can address climate change, conserve biodiversity, and enhance livelihoods.

30th Anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification:

In 2024, we mark three decades since the establishment of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. COP 16, held in Riyadh from December 2 to 13, 2024, will address critical desertification challenges.

Saudi Arabia plans to eliminate 4.1 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by 2035 and implement an effective waste management system.

Join the Movement

As Saudi Arabia takes the lead, let’s rally together:

  • Spread Awareness: Engage in online and in-person activities on June 5, 2024.
