Sri Lankan green pit viper (Craspedocephalus trigonocephalus)
The Green Pit Viper (Craspedocephalus trigonocephalus, Sinhala: පළා පොළඟා) is a moderately venomous snake endemic to Sri Lanka. It is one of the most colorful and attractive snakes in Sri Lanka. This snake is normally arboreal and nocturnal but descends to the ground in search of food.
Distribution: All three climatic zones (wet, dry, and intermediate) except the higher hills above an altitude of around 1200m.
Body description: Large and triangular head. Black lines on both sides of the head. Neck distinct. Stout body, medium-sized and thick. short, prehensile tail. Greenish body with a black variegated pattern (there are some exceptional individuals).
